Elliptical Trainer, and I eagerly anticipated the upgrade to this model (450). First, let me cover the basic pros and cons of adding an elliptical to your home gym. Prior to an elliptical, we used treadmills. I prefer working out on a treadmill, and I think your cardiovascular system gets a better workout when using them. Certainly my “wind” is better when consistently using a treadmill over an elliptical.
However, treadmills cannot take the same wear tear in the same price range.

A good elliptical can be purchased for less than $1000 and you can expect it to operate well with daily use for years. On occasion it may need to be tightened up or lubricated, but for the most part it is maintenance free. It is very unlikely you will get a treadmill to last more than 1 year of daily use unless you spend 5 times as much on it – and even then, the wear and tear just adds up faster. After going through 3 treadmills in 3 years, we decided to permanently convert to an elliptical.
Depending on who you ask, ellipticals burn more or less calories than treadmills. Some argue that treadmills burn more because you are usually moving faster, while others argue that ellipticals burn more calories because you are actively using more muscles.
